Headaches
What is the cause of my headache?
Anyone who has had persistent headaches will tell you... they are disabling. The symptoms vary greatly -- everything from a slight dull pressure to the extreme pounding pain of migraines. A thorough exam and a precise diagnosis are the first steps to ridding yourself of them. Some headaches are caused by muscle tension, which in turn may be caused by tight, knotted areas (or trigger points) in certain key areas of the body. These are usually quickly resolved, especially if the trigger points are located and treated early. I feel that my skills as chiropractor and a massage therapist make me uniquely qualified to find these points. I usually treat them with microcurrent stimulation. Please see the link on this site for more on microcurrent.

Other headaches are caused by stagnation of blood or lymph and are sometimes slower to show improvement, especially if the stagnation has reached the level of the organs. With stagnation, it is often best to combine several treatment modalities (like acupoint stimulation, massage, and adjusting) to encourage healing.

Another common type of headache comes from damaged joints of the neck.. We often see patients several years after a car accident, because the injuries will have caused degeneration of the cartilage in the spinal joints and they will be having daily pain, from these areas, that radiates up into the head. Chiropractic adjustments are uniquely suited to treat this type of headache.

Lastly, migraines have several "triggers" that need to be uncovered before lasting relief is accomplished. For some women there is an association with their menstrual cycle. Some people are sensitive to certain odors, especially stronger chemical smells. Some find certain foods will bring on migraines. A thorough history is therefore absolutely imperative. I spend an hour with my new patients and the history may be the biggest part of that hour. Once the trigger is identified, then I look to imbalances of the energetic system that are associated with it and treat those imbalances with chiropractic adjustments and microcurrent stimulation of acupuncture points. Please see related links on balancing.
