I am Dr. Wade Guthrie. I have practiced in Eugene since 1989 and have been a licensed chiropractor since 1986. You may have gathered from the earlier statement, that as a chiropractor, my work bears little resemblance to that of most of my colleagues.

My primary goal (in writing this web-page) is to give you some sense of what you should expect when coming in for healing. My challenge is to express something, which is largely experiential (not experimental) -- by which I mean that the way we proceed is based on a collaboration of your experiences and mine at the time of our meeting. But, I can tell you that I do work with touch.

My approach is to treat the deepest layers of your body (as in aligning your bones) by first addressing the habits of all the other "structures", which have moved you into your present state of discomfort. I use the word structures because, for me, it bridges your present physical body with the consciousness (or thought-structure), which preceded it.

Describing what you will feel during a treatment is also challenging, because the "language of touch" is much richer than the language of words. How could it be otherwise, considering that (in evolutionary terms) we have been communicating with touch much, much, longer than we have been using words? In fact, all of our sense organs are adaptations of the primitive cells, which relay touch.

Often, I do not put bones in place (directly) as much as persuade your soft tissues and bones with touch, to explore an alternative alignment. Please note: If you are one who enjoys the more traditional style of adjustments, I can provide you with this as well.

I will clear the tension from your overlying muscles and fascia first. For those not familiar: fascia are sheet-like ligaments, which surround and support all the structures of the body (like bones and organs) and provide the underlying support for your skin. I will have a lot more to say about fascia when I discuss how bioelectric energy moves along these fascia and my related use of acupuncture points...but for now:

The important thing to know is that muscles and fascia are separate structures only in an artificial sense, like you might see in the dissection lab at a chiropractic or medical school. In fact, your bones are continuous with your fascia, your fascia is continuous with your muscles, and your muscles are continuous with your mind. If this last reference to your mind seems out of place, ask yourself how it is that you move when you want to move or how it is that when you are afraid, so many muscles tighten!

I "read" the tension of these sheets of muscle and fascia and (simultaneously) move to promote the healthiest configuration. When I say, "move to promote" I am not only speaking of physical movements. To explain more fully: you may be familiar with instruments like EKG and EEG, which record the electrical activity of your heart and your brain. These recordings are possible because your brain and heart produce electrical signals, which travel through your fascia to the surface of your skin where they are collected and analyzed. Since I am also sending electrical signals to the surface of my skin (while treating you) that come from my thoughts and heartfelt emotions and since my electrical rhythms are mixing with yours at our point of contact, I can send healing "messages/massages" using touch to any part of your body.

The final ingredient, which makes healing happen, is a healing intention. In other words, we are all healers (of ourselves and others) when we do not let our own thought-structures inhibit what is joyous and peaceful. Consciousness and intention are the keys to unlock your life and I can help.

And For those wanting more: In a more scientific vein: the threadlike proteins (called collagen) that make up the fascia have a liquid crystalline structure. Liquid crystalline structures produce electrical currents when they are moved! If you are interested in finding out more about this phenomenon and how it may orchestrate the healing process, you should read: Hara Diagnosis: Reflections on the Sea, by Kiiko Matsumoto and Stephen Birch. They do an excellent job in showing how ancient methods of promoting health (like Tai Chi and Qigong) do so, by moving the fascia in such a way as to promote the smooth flow of the Chi (or life force).

My goal is to help you move your body joyfully, so that you can generate more of this life force/gift.

I also use some tools in my work; some for over 20 years. One tool I have used since 1986 is called microcurrent. The extremely subtle waves of electrical energy, which this tool emits, harmonize with the bioelectric currents of your body to produce some extraordinary results, especially when applied to acupuncture points.
